Omega 3
Properly grown flax seed is the food highest in Omega 3 source Essential Fatty Acid content. Omega 3 fatty acids are severely lacking in most people's diet, which are needed for brain, nerves, skin, circulatory and immune functions; and for preventing arthritis, cancer, heart disease, M.S., fibromyalgia; for weight control, and more.
Omega 3 fatty acids are deficient in most people. Flax seed is the best food for this crucially needed Omega 3.
There is a terrible widespread deficiency of Alpha Linolenic Acid, the Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acid, and of the Omega 3 fatty acids that are derived from it.
Omega 3 fatty acids are severely lacking in most people's diet, which are needed for brain, nerves, skin, circulatory and immune functions; and for preventing arthritis, cancer, heart disease, M.S., fibromyalgia; for weight control, and more.
Medical researcher, Dr. Donald O. Rudin, M.D., contends that the level of Linolenic acid in the American diet has been reduced 80% in the last 100 years. He has found that Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency is the basic cause of major mental illness today. (Biological Psychiatry, Vol. 16 No. 9, 1981)
Most people get far too much Omega 6 fatty acid (in almost all oils & fats), and nowhere near enough Omega 3 fatty acid. Our common foods have plenty of Omega 6 efa, but hardly any Omega 3 oil. As a result we have an epidemic of Attention Deficit Disorder, mental disturbances, and stressed, anxious people, as well as unneccessary pain and illness, even death.
The Omega 3 source ESSENTIAL Fatty Acid (efa) is Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA). An "essential" nutrient means that it is a primary nutrient that MUST come from food sources; the body can't make it from other materials. In most cases there are secondary nutrients that are derived from an essential nutrient. ALA forms the Omega 3 fatty acid, Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and others.
Lignans
Flax seed is by far the highest food in lignans, special antioxidants documented to protect against cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and other ailments. Antioxidants help to avert damage done by free radicals, molecular particles that zoom around inside the body seeking a missing electron. A typical antioxidant provides an electron to a free radical which ends its wild, damaging quest.
Flax seed has 100 times the lignan content of the next best food source. There are a total of 27 anti-cancer agents in flaxseed, mostly lignans.
(NOTE: When flax oil is expelled from the seed, most of the lignans are retained in the fiber, not in the oil.)
Some of the lignans are phytoestrogens. The low level of these natural compounds provided by flax seed can help balance female hormones and reduce PMS and other disturbances, without becoming a problem themselves.
Fiber
Flax seed is the best high fiber food, providing the greatest level (26%) of high quality dietary fiber of any food.
Flax seed is 14% highly beneficial soluble fiber, and 12% high quality insoluble fiber, which is also needed in the diet.
Flax seed is the best choice as a fiber supplement for those pursuing a healthy high fiber diet.
The high fiber of flax seed cleans the intestines and improves the ease & volume of bowel elimination (better than psyllium seeds) -- people love this benefit!
The mucilage, the unique soluble fiber in flaxseed, absorbs moisture and becomes very mucilagenous. When you drink plenty of pure water with it, this soft gentle fiber is both soothing and cleansing to the digestive tract, especially the intestinal walls.
The soluble fiber of flax can make bowel elimination easier while increasing its volume, and reduce irritation at the same time, even for people with "irritable bowel" or problems with diverticuli.
The insoluble fiber in flax exercises the bowel muscles as it helps broom out debris from the colon and provides bulk for the formation of feces.
Also, this special dietary fiber in flax gently cleans excess mucus and other debris from the small intestine, improving absorption.
Pregnant women can enjoy the benefit of easier bowel movement safely with the high fiber supplement of flax seed, and it provides them great nutrition -- the crucial Omega 3 fatty acids, plus high quality protein and many vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants.
Natural health experts have long said that illness, death and "old-age" begin in the colon. It is VERY important to improve things there with food high in fiber.
The high fiber of flax also lowers cholesterol (better than oat bran), and moves other fats along, lessening their absorption. Thus flax seed helps with managing both cholesterol and triglycerides.
By satisfying hunger with few calories and with it's ability to reduce absorption of fats, flax seed is very helpful with weight reduction and control. It is the perfect food for a fiber trimming process to become "fiber thin".
Protein
Flax seed is one of the very most nutritious foods. It is 22% protein of very high-quality, with all 9 essential amino acids. Protein is needed for the growth and repair of tissues; for the formation of enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and other biochemicals; and for the transport of other nutrients into the cells.
Although a great deal of protein is eaten by people, much of it is not well-digested due to deficiency of enzymes. Properly milled raw flaxseed is easy to digest, and it has enzymes within it to assist its own digestion. It is very important that certain amino acids be provided for early absorption in the digestive process, to form neurotransmitters for the brain and nerves.
Others
Flax contains 2% organically-bonded minerals. It is a good source of highly absorbable potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, selenium and boron.
It also has generous amounts of Vitamins A (Beta Carotene), B-1, B-2, B-3, B-6, B-12, and E.
